The Woodstock Music & Art Fair (informally Woodstock or Woodstock Festival ) was a music festival held August 15-17, 1969 on the property of a dairy farm near the city of Bethel , New York . It was arranged by Michael Lang , John Roberts , Joel Rosenman and Artie Kornfeld . That the festival was just called the Woodstock Festival was due to the fact that it was actually planned to organize it in the city of Woodstock , New York . When the organizers did not get permission there, the dairy farmer Max Yasgur left the ground for the festival. The organizers had expected an audience of up to 200,000 people, but instead came at least 400,000 people - perhaps even more since no exact count existed and the information therefore varies. The rumor spread lightning fast and the audience poured in spontaneously without any marketing whatsoever. The organizers had initially thought about paying for entry but soon gave up that idea and let everyone in for free. The roads around the festival were filled with cars, youth and hippies trying to get to the place. When people were not expecting so much, there was a shortage of food, toilets, sick tents and other facilities. It was very crowded, and the rainy weather made the ground muddy. Nevertheless, the audience at Woodstock has been described as very calm and sensed. Some famous moments from the festival were Janis Joplin's strong vocal performance, Jimi Hendrix's interpretation of the US national anthem , Santana's long syncopes, Ravi Shankar's guitar solo and Richie Haven's suggestive guitar song "Freedom". The festival, with its message of "Three Days of Peace and Music" ( Three Days of Peace and Music ) come to represent one of the highlights of the hippie era and lifestyle in the late 1960s. Several documentaries have been made
